The Institute of Mathematics has established exchange programs with numerous European universities and offers its students the opportunity to apply for a study abroad program lasting up to one year.
The most important information is summarized below; details and forms can be found on the International Affairs Office’s website.
Scholarship providers typically offer their scholarship recipients financial support (the amount of which depends in part on the family’s financial situation) and, in many cases, non-financial support (such as summer academies, scholarship recipient gatherings, and the like).
For some scholarships, the application process begins with a nomination by a professor, a college instructor, the registrar’s office, or—in the case of high school graduates—a teacher. For almost all scholarships, students may also apply on their own at an appropriate point during their studies.
This is followed by a selection process that generally takes into account not only academic performance but also extracurricular involvement and, in some cases, social factors. In addition to written application materials, personal interviews often play a role in this process. In some cases, letters of recommendation from faculty members are also required—in this case, reach out to those in whose courses you have achieved above-average grades; as a rule, they will be happy to assist you. A successful scholarship application certainly also requires a bit of luck.
Don't underestimate your achievements, your qualifications, and your chances of receiving a scholarship! Many scholarships are less “elite” than they seem at first glance. Be sure to find out well in advance about the available funding opportunities, the application process, and the deadlines you need to meet.
Many of these organizations for the promotion of gifted students allow students to apply on their own as early as the first semester. As a rule, admission is no longer possible toward the end of one’s studies. In addition to academic performance, extracurricular involvement also plays a major role. While religious scholarship organizations generally require membership in the respective religion or denomination, political scholarship organizations do not require involvement in the respective political party.
Even while pursuing a doctoral degree (and beyond), it is possible to work with the support of scholarships. For details on funding a doctoral program, please contact your (prospective) advisor.
The students of the faculty (student council) elect their representatives in the annual university elections. The student council of the School of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Statistics operates a web server in collaboration with other student councils, under its own sole responsibility.
Future graduates are also welcome to attend the Mathematics Institute's graduation ceremony!
