Dr. Philipp Scholl successfully defended his PhD thesis

23 Oct 2026

We are delighted to share that Dr. Philipp Scholl has successfully defended his doctoral thesis on “Scientific Machine Learning: Identifiability, Symbolic Regression, and Neural Operators”.

Last week, a PhD student from our Chair, Philipp Scholl, successfully defended his doctoral thesis at LMU on “Scientific Machine Learning: Identifiability, Symbolic Regression, and Neural Operators”, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Gitta Kutyniok.

Among the questions Philipp addressed in his research, are "Can AI discover mathematical laws from data?" and "How can we know whether it has found the right ones?". His work spans mutiple areas, from the foundations of identifiability and symbolic regression to neural operators, including applications in robotics in collaboration with the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft und Raumfahrt e.V., where he worked on learning friction laws from data.

Currently, Philipp is making a good use of his acquired knowledge, as he is working as an AI research at Aleph Alpha.

We were honoured to have Philipp at our Chair and wish him all the best in his next chapter!
