Math+AI Research Fellows Program

The MATH+AI Research Fellows Program is designed to identify, train, and integrate outstanding Master’s students into the research group, with the goal of preparing them for a potential PhD position. The program is not a standard HiWi position, but a structured pathway into research.

1. Expected Commitment

  • Duration: minimum 2 semesters
  • Weekly workload: aligned with contract (typically 8–10h/week)
  • Active participation in group activities is mandatory

2. Core Responsibilities

Each Research Fellow is expected to:

(A) Participate in Group Activities

  • Attend weekly group meeting (mandatory)
  • Attend seminars (mandatory unless justified)
  • Present at least once per month (progress, ideas, or problems)

(B) Work on a Research Problem

Each Fellow is assigned a clearly scoped research question, defined together with a PhD/Postdoc supervisor.
The goal is:

  • Not implementation-only tasks
  • But independent thinking and contribution

(C) Contribute to a Project

  • Work closely with a PhD/Postdoc
  • Take ownership of a well-defined subproblem
  • Gradually move from support to partial ownership

3. Supervision Structure

  • Each Fellow has 1 direct supervisor (PhD/Postdoc)
  • Regular check-ins with supervisor (weekly or biweekly)

4. Output Expectations (after ~6–12 months)

At least one of:

  • Contribution to a paper or workshop submission
  • A clearly documented research result
  • A Master’s thesis topic within the group

5. PhD Track (Important)

The program is the primary pathway into a PhD position in the group. The typical trajectory is:
1. Research Fellow (Master phase)
2. Increasing research ownership
3. Strong performance leads to PhD opportunity

6. Selection Criteria

  • Strong academic background
  • Interest in research (not just application)
  • Reliability and commitment
  • Willingness to engage with the group

7. Performance & Continuation

Continuation in the program requires:

  • Regular attendance
  • Active participation
  • Visible progress

If these are not met, the position may not be extended.

8. Key Principle

This program is not about completing tasks, but about becoming an independent researcher.
