Math on Saturday

In this lecture series, mathematical topics are presented each semester in a way that is easy to understand and accessible to a broad audience. This gives you the chance to experience and enjoy a bit of “real math,” and you’ll also have the opportunity to talk with the lecturers after the presentation.

Trial Studies

The trial program offers interested high school students the chance to gain insight into a mathematics degree program and to “really study” for a week. Through authentic courses tailored to your needs, you’ll get a taste of everyday student life and discover that university-level mathematics is much more than just doing calculations! The only real requirement is an interest in mathematics—the topics are deliberately chosen so that little prior knowledge is necessary.

This course is ideal if you're interested in math but aren't quite sure yet what to expect in college.

The trial semester usually takes place during the last week of summer vacation.

Early Studies

The Early Admission Program at LMU gives exceptionally gifted high school students the opportunity to take regular university courses while still in high school—in a subject that particularly interests them and in which they wish to pursue in-depth academic study.

You will study alongside regularly enrolled students, typically in in-person classes. Unlike, for example, a trial study program or a “University Day,” the early study program is not a separate program for a group of high school students, but rather individual participation in the regular curriculum—usually in a single course—for the entire duration of a semester.

Unitag

The “Unitag,” sponsored by the Bavarian State Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs, is designed as a “Studium Generale”: Every Friday during the semester—with the exception of school breaks—30 high school students from all over Upper Bavaria attend courses at LMU Munich that have been specially curated and designed for them, covering various academic disciplines—ranging from the natural sciences to the humanities and medicine.

CMP - Call a Math Teacher

In school, students often learn very little about mathematics at the university level, let alone about current research topics. To change that, students and teachers can arrange for lectures on interesting mathematical topics to be held at their school or attend them here at the institute.

Seminars

The Bavarian State Ministry of Education and Culture offers various seminars for gifted students, in which faculty members from our institute regularly teach mathematics-related topics, such as the summer seminar, the “Big Questions” seminar, or specialized mathematics seminars.

Day of Mathematics

Once a year, usually in the spring, the Mathematics Department, in collaboration with P-seminars, hosts a day featuring interesting workshops, a competition, and mathematics lectures for students in grades 5 through 10.

A selection of past program highlights:

  • Rabbits—A Field Study of the Fibonacci Sequence (Workshop)
  • The Game SET and How to Win (Workshop)
  • Secret Scripts (Workshop)
  • Seeing Through Manipulative Statistical Information (Lecture)
  • From Theory to Practice: Building and Understanding Stickbombs (Workshop)
  • Billiards in Polygons (Lecture)

Programs from previous years:

Lyceum

More than just a math club—Lyzeum 2 is a hub for students who love to think and are eager to take on challenges to gain a wealth of knowledge. We hire exceptional instructors who are passionate about their subjects, teach in an inspiring way, and bring university-level standards to secondary education. Students and instructors form a community that strives for a deeper understanding of the phenomena they study.
